Charter Steel Starts up Hi Jet Technology System

Charter Steel recently started up Moré Srl’s Hi Jet chemical energy technology in their 100 ton DC EAF.

The meltshop upgrade comprised replacement of an existing consumable lance manipulator and side-wall combined burners/injectors in the EAF shell with three Hi Jet units. Moré also supplied new oxygen/natural gas valves stands, three carbon dispensers, electrical/automation equipment and an intelligent Human Machine Interface for complete control of the chemical energy package.

HiJet technology consists of a coherent sonic-velocity carbon fines injection stream with a supersonic-coherent oxygen stream and coherent natural gas stream. The system provides penetration of supersonic-oxygen and sonic-carbon fines into the liquid steel for exothermic reactions, foaming slag conditioning and metallurgical control.

Located in Saukville, Wis., Charter Steel is a leading American supplier of carbon and alloy steel bar, rod and wire products. Charter's meltshop is capable of producing 550,000 tons of billets annually.
