Charter Steel Partners With Primetals Technologies on Mill Expansion, Upgrades
06/08/2017 - U.S.-based Charter Steel has awarded a contract to Primetals Technologies for equipment related to its US$150 million engineered bar mill in Ohio.
In a statement, Primetals said it will supply the cooling bed, cold shear, abrasive saws, stackers, and bar bundling and banding machines for the mill, which is being installed at its Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio, USA, facility. Charter Steel announced plans for the mill in January.
It will be capable of producing straight-length special bar quality (SBQ) in diameters of between 0.75 and 3.25 inches and in lengths of between 12 and 50 feet, Primetals said.
In addition to building the new mill, Charter Steel has contracted with Primetals for upgrades to the facility’s existing coiled rod and bar line. As part of those upgrade, Primetals will supply new troughs, shears, water boxes and switches, along with related electrical and automation packages.
Primetals also will outfit the line with its stepless reform and coil transfer technology. The coil handling equipment will employ both vertical and horizontal pallet systems to improve coil packaging, Primetals said.
“Primetals Technologies has had a strong and successful working partnership with Charter Steel for many years and was selected to supply equipment that supported design criteria to enhance production flexibility, allowing Charter Steel to respond rapidly to the varying demands of its customers,” Primetals said in a statement.
The work is to be completed in the second half of 2018.
