CEC Lands Engineering Contract for Steel Dynamics' Aluminum Mill
04/26/2023 - Steel Dynamics Inc. has awarded an engineering contract to Pittsburgh-based Civil & Environmental Consultants Inc. (CEC) for the steelmaker’s planned aluminum facilities.
Under the contract, CEC is to provide general arrangements, scheduling and structural, mechanical, electrical, and piping engineering for the project, which consists of an aluminum sheet mill in Columbus, Miss., and two recycled aluminum slab casting facilities in Mexico and the southwestern U.S.
“We have previously partnered with CEC and they have a strong understanding of our work process. The ability to keep projects on track and identify problems before they happen helps us accomplish our goals in a safe and timely manner,” said Glenn Pushis, SDI’s senior vice president, strategic projects.
CEC has already begun work on the project and is adding engineers and designers to the project team.

The rolling mill, which will be supported by the two slab plants, is being designed to produce 650,000 metric tons annually for the beverage packaging, automotive and common alloy industrial sectors. Its offerings will include value-added products as the plant will have continuous annealing solutions heat treat and continuous coating capabilities. It will also have various slitting and packaging operations.
