Carmeuse Obtains Air Permit for Two New Vertical Lime Kilns
07/17/2014 - Carmeuse Lime & Stone is pleased to announce the planned construction and operation of two 440-ton-per-day vertical lime kilns at its plant located in Frederick County, Va.
These vertical kilns will be more fuel efficient than the horizontal kilns used at most lime operations in North America. This new capacity at Frederick County will service the growing demand for lime in the eastern United States. Potential markets include steel, water treatment, construction and flue gas desulfurization (FGD). Carmeuse views FGD as a growth market in the eastern United States.
“We are very pleased to add this new fuel efficient technology to our North American operations,” said James Bottom, area operations manager for the Carmeuse limestone quarries at Strasburg, Middletown and Frederick County, Va.
“We are an environmentally conscious company,” Bottom explains. “Many of the products produced by Carmeuse benefit the environment. For example, a significant amount of lime and limestone are used in the flue gas desulfurization process at coal burning power plants. Lime and limestone reduce the amount of sulfur dioxide that is emitted into the atmosphere, which reduces acid rain.”
Carmeuse products are also used to make steel, to build roads, to improve farm soil and to make paper and glass. Lime and limestone products are critical components to many of the products that we use daily.
Carmeuse North America is a leading company, specializing in manufacturing and supplying lime and limestone products for diverse applications in steel manufacturing, power generation, road construction and land development, the building industry, water treatment, waste treatment, and chemical treatments. Carmeuse products benefit the environment in a variety of ways including cleaner air, cleaner water, and the preservation of land resources. Staffed by over to 2,000 people, Carmeuse has 28 plants that supply and serve most of the USA and Eastern Canada.
