Canadian, Mexican Steel Associations Call for End to Tariffs
09/06/2018 - The Canadian Steel Producers Association and CANACERO, Mexico’s steel association, have called for an end to the Section 232 tariffs through the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
“The NAFTA renegotiation represents an ideal opportunity to eliminate trade barriers on steel and aluminum within the region to fortify key North American supply chains in energy, industrial, building and manufacturing applications,” said Joseph Galimberti, president of the Canadian Steel Producers Association.
Added CANACERO President Máximo Vedoya: “A NAFTA with steel and aluminum tariffs substantially counters the (agreement’s) main purpose.”
NAFTA negotiations resumed this week with the U.S. and Canada trying to work out their end of the deal. The U.S. and Mexico reached a preliminary agreement last week. That agreement, however, did not address the Section 232 tariffs.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the steel tariffs and U.S. access to the Canadian dairy market are among the issues that are keeping the U.S. and Canada apart on a new deal.
