Calderys Ignites Innovation With New R&D Hub
02/27/2025 - The Calderys Group is investing in a new 3,000-square-meter Innovation Center for refractories research and development (R&D) near its production facility in Neuwied, Germany.
According to a press release, equipment will include machinery for determining high-temperature properties, mineralogical and chemical composition, and imaging for advanced material characterization. Its central location, close to other Calderys sites, will provide easy access to industrial and scale-up trials and collaboration.
“These investments will further elevate quality control, research capabilities, and efficiency, ensuring that customers continue to receive products of the highest quality and performance,” the company said.
Calderys said the facility will be equipped with modular rooms for R&D activities. The rooms will feature fully connected infrastructure with air, water, dusting, IT, ventilation facilities and a showroom. They estimate this will enable them to develop innovative solutions for operations and customers across the Europe and Middle East (EMEA) region.
“We are supporting the growth of our EMEA operations, in particular in Germany where we have five production sites, and we are reinforcing our commitment to delivering tailored, cutting-edge solutions to our customers, with a special focus on innovation that supports their green energy transition needs,” said Michel Cornelissen, president and chief executive officer of Calderys.
This marks Calderys’ third Innovation Center, complementing R&D hubs in the U.S. and India. The company said they are also expanding in India with a 2,000-square-meter lab in Odisha.
“We are excited to leverage local talent and resources to create a positive impact — for our company, our customers and the community,” said Bruno Touzo, senior vice president of innovation and technology.
The company said they expect construction to be complete by late 2025.
