Broner’s Integrated Scheduling Solution Goes Live at CSN in Brazil

CSN has a long standing business relationship with Broner dating back to Broner’s initial solution implementation in 2001. The objective of this project was to combine Broner’s solutions to work together to enable CSN’s multiple casters, hot mills and steelmaking processes to generate synchronized schedules, consider the entire order book and provide an opportunity to increase production targets.  The aim was to achieve 40% hot connect dependent upon manufacturing conditions and the content of the order book.

The synchronization between the caster scheduler and the hot mill scheduler enables the solution to support and continue the current CSN practice of achieving these average temperatures, and provide the opportunity to increase it.

The following benefits are expected as a result of this project implementation:
•           Improved hot charge on the hot strip mill
•           Increased tundish utilization
•           Reduction of stock on the slab yard.

Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN) is the largest fully integrated steel producer in Brazil and one of the largest in Latin America in terms of crude steel production.  Its annual crude steel capacity and rolled product capacity are 5.6 million and 5.1 million tons, respectively.  It produces a broad line of steel products including slabs, hot and cold rolled, galvanized and tin mill products.  Its products are used in distribution, packing, automotive, home appliance and construction industries. CSN accounts for approximately 49% of the galvanized steel products sold in Brazil and is one of the world’s leading producers of tin mill products. CSN is also unique in owning its own source of iron ore.
