Borusan Mannesmann Pipe Partners with Siemens for First U.S. Manufacturing Facility
06/04/2013 - Borusan Mannesmann, a Turkish steel pipe manufacturer and leading player in the European market, has turned to Siemens for the expansion of its operations in the U.S.
The company is building its new ERW (electric resistance welded) pipe mill and accompanying heat treatment plant to quench and temper oil country tubular goods (OCTG) in Baytown, Texas. This will be the first Turkish owned plant in the U.S.
The competitive landscape is very high in the OCTG market. Borusan needed to separate themselves from an ever-growing number of similar producers by providing the market with higher quality products. Siemens’ offering of FCE – F&D Furnace Technologies quenching and tempering equipment enables Borusan to achieve this immediately. Siemens will supply a direct-fired, walking beam, austenitizing furnace; a high pressure, water spray quench system; a convective, walking beam, tempering furnace; all associated material handling equipment; all necessary instrumentation; and PLC control system. The services include engineering, delivering, installing, and commissioning for the heat treatment plant.
“Borusan was looking to differentiate itself as a new local player in this market. We needed equipment that would allow us to manufacture top-quality tubes to the energy sector as well as enable us to provide a wide array of heat treated products to the market,” explains Buddy Brewer, CEO of Borusan Mannesmann Pipe U.S. Borusan will have the capability to produce API N-80 through Q-125, as well as custom engineered grades, at this new facility. “Siemens presented us with proven, innovative technologies that met our needs to ensure success as a local OCTG supplier,” says Brewer.
The plant broke ground in April and its expected completion is third quarter of 2014.
