BMW Group Partners With H2 Green Steel to Help Reduce CO2 Emissions
10/21/2021 - BMW Group has reached an agreement with H2 Green Steel, a Swedish steel startup, to push forward with reducing CO2 emissions within its supply chain.
Starting in 2025, the automaker plans to use steel produced with up to 95% less CO2 emissions and without requiring fossil resources such as coal. To that end, BMW has announced their partnership with H2 Green Steel, a company that only uses green power and hydrogen from renewable energies for their steel production.
“Our goal is to reduce CO2 emissions in our steel supply chain by about 2 million tons by 2030. Sourcing steel produced using hydrogen and green power can make a vital contribution to this,” Andreas Wendt, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Purchasing and Supplier Network, said. “Steel is essential for producing cars and will be no less important for future vehicle generations. Innovative technologies that enable virtually carbon-free production of steel have a significant impact on our ability to reduce CO2 emissions in our steel supply chain.”
