BlueScope Teams Up With Shell on Renewable Hydrogen Projects
12/07/2021 - The Australian steelmaker today announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shell Energy Operations Pty Ltd. to develop renewable hydrogen projects at its Port Kembla Steelworks in New South Wales.
The collaboration includes two projects: a pilot-scale 10-MW renewable hydrogen electrolyzer plant at the Port Kembla Steelworks and the development of a “hydrogen hub” in the Illawarra region, BlueScope said in a press release.
The electrolyzer plant will explore and test the use of green hydrogen in the Port Kembla Steelworks’ blast furnace. The hydrogen produced at the facility could also potentially be used to feed a pilot direct reduced iron plant.
The hydrogen hub project will explore options for hydrogen and renewable energy supply, and hydrogen and electricity infrastructure, among others.
BlueScope chief executive Mark Vassella said, “We are excited about the potential for these projects and are pleased to be working with Shell which brings global expertise in developing new energy technologies, including green hydrogen.”
"The projects announced today demonstrate BlueScope’s commitment to taking real action on climate change,” he added.
