BlueScope Steel Considers New U.S. Site
09/21/2021 - According to reports, Australian steelmaker BlueScope Steel Ltd. is considering construction of a new electric arc furnace–based painted and coated steel products mill in the United States.
The greenfield facility would be situated on the East Coast, according to Recycling Today, who reports that the steelmaker is considering the move in light of the “optimistic outlook” in the U.S. construction market.
During an investors’ webcast on Monday, BlueScope chief executive Mark Vassella said, “What gives us confidence to investigate [a new mill] is it’s a very large market,” according to the Australian Financial Review (AFR).
The cost of the mill was not disclosed, AFR said.
BlueScope is currently undergoing a US$1 billion expansion at its North Star EAF mill in Ohio, with additional upgrades forthcoming.
