BlueScope Acquires U.S. Scrap Business

MetalX supplies scrap feed to BlueScope’s Ohio-based North Star BlueScope Steel. The two sites being acquired are located in Indiana and in Ohio, adjacent to the North Star facility in Delta, Ohio, USA.

“The U.S. is a key focus for BlueScope’s future growth. The MetalX ferrous acquisition adds to our extensive U.S. asset footprint of over US$3.0 billion, which spans steelmaking, steel coating and painting, engineered building systems and industrial property development,” said BlueScope’s managing director and chief executive Mark Vassella. “And we have current and intended expansion projects totaling up to US$1.5 billion, including the NorthStar expansion project.

“Using our strong financial position, moving upstream to acquire a scrap supply business helps underpin North Star’s supply chain and its great competitiveness. North Star will soon move from a 2 million tons per annum mill to almost 3 million tons per annum, and as the business expands, securing scrap is the right play,” Vassella added.

According to the company, the acquisition will further enhance BlueScope’s “sustainability profile by bringing in-house part of North Star’s scrap collection.”

The acquisition is anticipated to close by end of December.
