Blastr Green Steel Partners With SFE on Pellet Plant in Norway
10/19/2023 - Blastr Green Steel announced it has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with power company Sogn og Fjordane Energi (SFE) for the long-term supply of clean electricity to the company’s planned pellet plant in Lutelandet, Norway.
Blastr selected the Lutelandet industrial area in August as a possible location of a plant that will convert iron ore pellet feed into direct reduction (DR) pellets. The site would potentially supply feedstock to Blastr’s ultralow-CO₂ steel plant currently under development in Finland.
“This is an important step toward securing power capacity and grid connection for the potential pellet plant at Lutelandet which will leverage renewable hydro and wind power to accelerate the development of a decarbonized steel value chain,” said Hans Fredrik Wittusen, chief executive Blastr Green Steel. “We are very pleased with the support from SFE and other key regional partners as we progress the development plan for the Lutelandet site.”
The pellet plant has the potential to deliver more than 90% reduction of Scope 1–3 CO2 emissions compared to conventional steelmaking, according to a press release from Blastr.
