Blastr Green Steel Eyes U.K. Port for DR Pellet Plant
07/10/2023 - Startup Blastr Green Steel is considering a U.K. bulk terminal as the home of its planned 6-million-metric-ton direct reduction pellet plant.
Under a letter of intent with Redcar Bulk Terminal in Teesside, Blastr is studying the terminal’s feasibility as the site for the plant, which would feed Blastr’s planned steel plant in Inkoo, Finland, and would sell to third-party customers.
‘’Redcar Bulk Terminal is an attractive location, offering access to a deepwater port, good grid connection, and access to the required utilities,” said Blastr chief executive Hans Fredrik Wittusen. “The Teesside industrial region offers potential synergies with companies developing green industries, including near-term projects to expand offshore wind, hydrogen, and the development of the Net Zero Teesside industrial cluster.’’
Blastr had been exploring a site in Norway, but ended discussions after the Norwegian grid authority confirmed that Blastr would be unable to receive needed grid capacity in the required time frame.
“Blastr, therefore, continues to explore alternative locations for its pellet plant in both Norway and the U.K.,” it said.
The company is looking to choose a pellet plant location by the end of this year.
