Big River Gets Rolling on Expansion Plans
06/18/2019 - Big River Steel expects to break ground later this year on an electrical steel processing facility and is weighing installation of new pickling capacity, chief executive David Stickler said Tuesday.
Speaking during Fastmarkets AMM’s annual Steel Success Strategies conference in New York City, Stickler said the start of construction on the non-oriented electrical steel facility is likely to occur at the end of summer.
“We have already taken our hot-rolled substrate and sent it to Europe to have it processed very successfully into non-grain-oriented steel,” he said.
Also, he said the company is looking at building additional pickling capacity to better serve its customers.
“Many of our customers have said, ‘We like the pickled product that you currently produce; however, it would be nice if you could get us some thicker gauge material.’”
Meanwhile, Stickler said construction is underway on the expansion of its Arkansas sheet mill, which will receive a second EAF, ladle metallurgy station, caster, tunnel furnace and downcoiler. The project will double the mill’s capacity to 3.3 million tons.
Stickler said concrete is being poured and rebar is being laid for the project.
“We’re well on our way,” he said.
