Big River Chooses Technology Supplier for Arkansas Expansion
03/25/2019 - SMS group has locked up a contract to expand Big River Steel’s flex mill in Arkansas, the equipment supplier said on Monday.
In a statement, SMS group said the order includes a second electric arc furnace, twin-ladle metallurgy furnace and gas cleaning system. A second strand, tunnel furnace and additional downcoiler also will be added to the CSP mill.
In addition, the company will install another coiler on the continuous galvanizing line.
“For all the newly installed plants, SMS group is going to supply the mechanical equipment and the X-Pact® electrical and automation systems, including level 3,” it said in a statement.
The expansion will take the mill’s output to 3 million tons annually, according to SMS group. SMS group was the lead technology supplier on the plant’s initial build-out.
“We are very pleased about Big River Steel’s decision to also award us the order for the next expansion stage of the steel plant and to continue on the proven successful way with SMS group as their partner,” said Burkhard Dahmen, SMS group’s managing board chairman.
