Biden Administration Unveils Plans to Accelerate Clean Hydrogen Production
02/16/2022 - The White House yesterday announced the Biden administration is undertaking new actions to support American leadership on clean manufacturing, which will include ramping up the production of clean hydrogen.
In an official statement, the administration laid out actions across several agencies that will create jobs, address the climate crisis and boost clean manufacturing in the U.S.
“Further strengthening our industrial base will revitalize local economies, lower prices for consumers, provide more pathways to the middle class through union jobs and boost American competitiveness in global markets,” the administration said in the statement.
Among the actions the administration announced are the Department of Energy’s clean hydrogen initiatives, which will include US$8 billion for regional clean hydrogen hubs, US$1 billion for a clean hydrogen electrolysis program and US$500 million for clean hydrogen manufacturing and recycling initiatives.
“Clean hydrogen can reduce emissions in many sectors of the economy, and is especially important for hard-to-decarbonize sectors and industrial processes, such as steel manufacturing,” the administration said.
Last week the Department of Energy announced US$28 million for R&D and engineering design projects to advance clean hydrogen in industrial applications.
In addition, the Council on Environmental Quality is issuing new guidance on the deployment of carbon capture, utilization and sequestration technologies.
