Berry Metal Wraps Up Lime Injection Install on Arkansas EAF
08/07/2020 - Big River Steel has commissioned a new lime injection system on its electric arc furnace (EAF) in Arkansas, according to project contractor Berry Metal Co.
According to Berry Metal, the custom system achieved its designed flow rate of 1,000 pounds/minute for Dolomitic and HiCal. The rate is one of the highest flow rates in North America, according to the company.
Berry Metal said the system was built under an exclusive partnership with Minnesota-based Nol-Tec Systems, a specialist in pneumatic conveying systems for dry bulk materials. Nol-Tec contributed its Air Assist Injection and Transport Technology, which complemented Berry Metal’s patented lime injectors/burners.
“This new lime injection technology provides two critical advantages. First, it allows for successful flow of various gradients and sizing of lime particles from lime dust up to 1 ½ inches nominal sizing without clogging. Secondly, the lime injectors provide an accelerated punch into the bath increasing yield and efficiency in the steel making process,” it said.
Berry Metal said the system was installed and cold commissioned during regular mill operations. “All calibrations and test testing was performed on scheduled downtime,” the company said.
Berry Metal also has been contracted to install a similar system on Big River’s second EAF, part of an expansion project to be completed next year.
