Bayi Iron Steel Takes the Lead in Green Buildings in China

Green building refers to the use of environmentally friendly materials and technologies in buildings.

Baosteel Group Xinjiang Bayi Iron Steel Co is a steel producer based in the Urumqi Economic Development Zone in Toutunhe district. The establishment of the new company is considered as an important step by Bayi Iron Steel in accelerating its restructure and development process.

"Bayi Iron Steel started to transform when we began to sell steel products to the Middle East via westbound trains earlier this year. This year, the company will control steel production, and concentrate on developing diversified affiliated industries and deep-processing,"said Shen Dongxin, president of Bayi Iron Steel. .

Shen also said that Xinjiang Green Building Co's products will be used in the construction of the teaching blocks of the Xinjiang Iron Steel School and a garden villa in Binhe district, Xinjiang.

Xinjiang Bayi Iron Steel Co set up the first steel blast furnace in Xinjiang's Gobi Desert sixty-four years ago. With the use of its steel products and steel slag, the company has now completed the first green building in Xinjiang - the library of Bayi Iron Steel School - in its corporate residential area.

With the China economy entering a 'new normal", Baiyi Iron Steel has made efforts to push forward its industrial transformation and upgrading. The company has shifted away from solely selling steel to selling steel products, adding value to its steel products and extending its industrial chain. Meanwhile, the newly-established Xinjiang Green Building Co is expected to become the only green building certification agency in Xinjiang to go public.

With a registered capital of 50 million yuan ($8.05 million), Xinjiang Green Building Co is engaged in designing and certifying green building products, organizing green building construction and decorating buildings. It aims to become a key promoter and practitioner of green buildings in Xinjiang.

According to the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region Green Building Action Program, the region will build two green ecological districts by the end of 2015. By the end of 2020, the number of ecological districts in the region is expected to reach seven.

" We will implement green building evaluation standards on government-subsidized housing units this year and encourage real estate developers to build green residential buildings," said Shi Zhengwu, head of the energy-saving building division of the Xinjiang Housing and Urban-Rural Development Department.
