Baosteel Steel Canmaking to Begin Lid Making

Baosteel Canmaking recently achieved Coca-Cola supplier qualification certification and officially began lid making for Baosteel Metal’s five subordinating canmaking companies. Baosteel notes that completion of its canmaking project enables it to form a complete industrial chain in the packaging business.

Total output of two-piece cans reached 18 billion in China last year, according to Baosteel. After years of development, Baosteel has now reached 3 billion annual production capacity. Previously, Baosteel steel can lids were procured externally. Baosteel Canmaking claims that it has become the first domestic easy-open lid enterprise capable of producing compatible steel cans.

The second phase of the project also has begun and is expected to be put into operation in September this year. By then, Baosteel annual lid output capacity is expected to reach 3.5 billion.

At the end of this year, Baosteel lid making plans to launch the third phase of the project, as it strives to achieve 5.5 billion annual lid output by 2013, laying the foundation for its longer-term goal of 8 billion annual lid output by 2015. After meeting this “self-supporting demand,” Baosteel lid making plans to turn to the external market and consider external supply.
