Baosteel Receives National Award for Scientific and Technological Progress

Baosteel was recently awarded second prize of the National Award for Scientific and Technological Progress for its "Comprehensive Technologies for Steelmakers' Utilization and Emission Reduction of By-product Gas". Presented during the National Science and Technology Awards Conference 2008, the award represents the first energy efficiency & emission reduction project to win this honor in the metallurgical industry.

For the first time, evaluation for this year’s National Award for Scientific and Technological Progress included a separate panel on "circular economy and energy efficiency & emission reduction". Baosteel Branch's "Comprehensive Technologies for Steelmakers' Utilization and Emission Reduction of By-product Gas" won full approval of the experts in the new panel for its outstanding contributions in helping Chinese steelmakers to realize cascaded energy utilization; improve economic & environmental efficiency through comprehensive utilization of by-product gas; and realize sustainable development.

Since the startup of production, Baosteel has explored the complete set of technologies for recovery and comprehensive utilization of by-product gas as it worked to develop a comprehensive utilization system for by-product gas. Building on its own IT platform, Baosteel independently designed, developed and integrated a real-time monitoring system and energy management database for energy center (the first such system in China),  and set up a modern IT-based management & control model for distributed control, centralized management and optimized decision-making of the gas system. Baosteel also developed the limit-value analysis method for BOF gas recovery and built the complete dual BOF gas holder synchronized operation system to solve the conflict between intermittent recovery and continuous use of BOF gas; developed a gas-steam combined cycle power plant that uses low-caloric-value pure BF gas (the first such plant in the world), and solved many technological difficulties that affect the stable operation of the plant. Baosteel Branch's gas system is now connected to the Medium & Heavy Plate Branch through the energy gallery in the north, making Baosteel's gas system the largest automatic gas control system in the global steel industry.

Baosteel Branch’s progress in developing comprehensive technologies for utilization and emissions-reduction of by-product gas has allowed the company to achieve significant progress regarding energy efficiency, reduced consumption, and reducing environmental load. According to the company, by-product gas recovery and utilization has directly generated RMB 567 million yuan of economic benefit and cut down CO2 emission by 345.45 tons. The company has also acquired 21 national patents and 65 corporate technical know-how related to by-product gas recovery and utilization technologies, many of which have been promoted to the Chinese metallurgical industry for application.

Last year Baosteel Branch's blast furnace gas flare ratio was lower than 0.87%, and its BOF gas recovery ratio was more than 99.7 standard cubic meters per ton of steel. The company also maintains a zero flare for coke oven gas, and its comprehensive utilization level for by-product gas steadily pushes toward the leading rank in the world.
