Avdiivka Coking and Chemicals Plant Invests in Emissions Reduction
11/18/2010 - Avdiivka Coking and Chemicals Plant has started test operation of the closed coking gas cooling unit at the second section of Collection Shop #1. This is the final phase of the coking gas final cooling system reconstruction, which reduces annual emissions of chemical substances by more than 2,000 tonnes.
Avdiivka Coking and Chemicals Plant (AKKhZ) has started test operation of the closed coking gas cooling unit worth UAH 15.5 million at the second section of Collection Shop #1. This is the final phase of the coking gas final cooling system reconstruction, which reduces annual emissions of chemical substances by more than 2,000 tonnes.
Total investments into implementation of this environmental project will be around UAH 40 million.
Before the investment, coking gas was cooled by direct contact with process water. At the same time, the water dissolved part of naphthalene, benzole, ammonia, sulphur compounds, and other chemical substances, which evaporated during further cooling by air in the cooling towers. AKKhZ specialists developed a cooling technology that eliminates contact of the gas with water, preventing air exposure to chemical substances in the cooling towers.
The technology is based on compact three phase spiral chillers from Swedish Alfa Laval especially designed for AKKhZ.
In November 2006, the closed cooling system was implemented in Desulfurization Shop #2, which eliminated 640 tonnes of annual emissions. UAH 10 million was spent under this project. In 2008, the environmental technology was implemented in the first section of Collection Shop #1 (investments comprised UAH 12.96 million; 766 tonnes of annual emissions eliminated).
In 2010, thanks to alternation of the desulfurization scheme in the second section of the shop, atmospheric emissions in the open coolers of AKKhZ were eliminated in full.
The company says that the closed coking gas cooling technology also reduced the burden of the biochemical units of the plant purifying process water, improving reliability, quality of water treatment, and helping to reduce the volume of water procurement for AKKhZ production needs.
JSC Avdiivka Coke Plant (Avdiivka Coke) is said to be the largest and most high-tech coking and chemicals enterprise in Europe, producing around 30 types of products, with metallurgical coke as the core product. Avdiivka Coke is part of the Coal and Coke Division of Metinvest Group.
Metinvest is an international vertically integrated mining and metallurgical group of companies. Production facilities of Metinvest Group enterprises allow both to satisfy their own demand for raw materials, liquid steel, and semi-finished products and to be a supplier for major Ukrainian and European companies as well as Asian companies. The shareholders of Metinvest Group are SCM Group (75%) and Smart Holding (25%), managing Metinvest Group on a partnership basis.
