"Dave was instrumental in conceiving the Auto/Steel partnership by getting the auto and steel industries on the same side of the table to address problems rather than cast blame on each other," said Heimbuch. "Thanks to Dave's pioneering work, the Auto/Steel Partnership has been able to undertake some challenging projects and set a new benchmark for cross-industry collaboration over the past 20 years."

According to Heimbuch, the unique Auto/Steel Partnership Founder's Award recognizes Cole's vision and leadership in the mid-1980s in helping to bring the automotive and steel industries together and address common issues that could strengthen both industries.

"Dave was a catalyst in laying the foundation for the partnership," said Ron Krupitzer, Vice President, Automotive Applications for the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). "We are certain that through Dave's vision, we will continue to exceed our goals of improving vehicle fuel economy, quality, and affordability and the Auto/Steel Partnership will be an even greater success in the years ahead."

Cole, Chairman of the Center for Automotive Research, was honored at the Management Briefing Seminars currently underway in Traverse City, Mich.

Formed in 1987, The Auto/Steel Partnership is a consortium of the AISI Automotive Applications Committee, DaimlerChrysler Corp., Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. that is dedicated to ensuring that steel is the competitive material of choice. The partnership leverages the resources of the automotive and steel industries to pursue research, validation and education, helping automakers enhance vehicle safety and fuel economy, and improve design and manufacturing.

Through the Auto/Steel Partnership, automakers and steel companies have worked to drive improvements through projects focused on new steels, manufacturing processes, and design challenges like mass reduction with steel.
