Austrian Government OKs voestalpine Pilot Hydrogen Plant
01/17/2018 - voestalpine AG has won approval to build a pilot version of a carbon-free hydrogen production plant, advancing its efforts to eliminate carbon emissions in steelmaking, the company said on Tuesday.
voestalpine said the hydrogen electrolysis plant, to be built at its Linz mill in Austria, will be the largest and most advanced plant of its type.
"In view of the European Union’s 2030 climate and energy goals, both industry and utilities face enormous energy-related challenges that demand fundamental technological changes. For years, voestalpine has been taking steps towards gradually de-carbonizing the steel production process. This hydrogen pilot plant is finally paving the way for research into true breakthrough technologies," said voestalpine chairman Wolfgang Eder.
At the heart of the plant will be what voestalpine called the world’s largest proton exchange membrane electrolyzer, capable of producing 1,200 cubic meters of hydrogen per hour. voestalpine said the system, which was developed by project partner Siemens, will be more efficient than any other comparable system.
It said the plant will be powered by renewable forms of electricity.
