Australian Steelmaker Starts Up Modified Furnace
07/03/2017 - Australia’s OneSteel has added a new sidewall injection system to an electric arc furnace at its Laverton mill in Melbourne.
According to equipment supplier MORE S.r.l., OneSteel upgraded the 100-ton, oval bottom tapping furnace with new M-ONE sidewall oxygen and carbon injectors as well as a dedicated pneumatic dololime injection system.
MORE said the system consists of a 792-gallon MOLI dispenser; three M-ONE and one LIMEJET injectors; and a FLASH STOP system.
“EAF operations have improved both in terms of productivity and overall process control, decreasing electric energy usage from 393 kWh/ton to 377 kWh/ton and reducing power-on time from 34 minutes to 32 minutes,” MORE said in a statement.
“Moreover, there has been a dramatic increase of injected solid material, and now foaming slag is more stable, repeatable, with a quick and more efficient dephosphorization.”
