Australian Labor Union Seeks Tariffs on Chinese Steel
02/27/2017 - Saying that dumped steel from China has cost Australian steelmakers AU$200 million over the past 12 to 18 months, Australia’s largest labor union is preparing to file a complaint with the federal government.
“It’s an unacceptable proposition … where there are huge amounts of government funding going into major infrastructure projects and we don’t have a single scrap of Australian steel going into them,’’ Daniel Walton, the newly elected national secretary of the Australian Workers’ Union, told The Australian newspaper.
According to the newspaper, the complaint will seek imposition of duties on dumped Chinese steel.
“We will also consider whether a US method of dealing with major Chinese state-owned steel importers as a collective is possible in Australia," the union said.
