August Steel Shipments up 11.5% from July

U.S. steel mills shipped 7,224,190 net tons for the month of August 2010, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). The August total reflects an 11.5% increase from the 6,481,886 net tons shipped in the previous month (July 2010), and a 29.7% increase from the 5,570,368 net tons shipped in August 2009. 
 
For the year to date, shipments are 56,014,216, a 51.4% increase vs. 2009 shipments of 36,998,139 for the first eight months. 2010 shipments through August would annualize at 84.0 million tons.
 
A month-to-month comparison of shipments shows the following changes:
 
·         Hot rolled sheet, up 15%
·         Hot dip galvanized sheet and strip, up 12%
·         Cold rolled sheet, up 4%
 
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. The Institute comprises 23 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 138 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
