ATI Allegheny Ludlum to Supply Taiwan Power Project

ATI Allegheny Ludlum has been selected to supply specialty metals for the reactor building service-water piping system at the Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) Number 4 power plant located in Lungmen, Taiwan.

Allegheny Ludlum will supply its AL-6XN Optimized(TM) alloy, a super-austenitic alloy designed for saltwater environments. The AL-6XN Optimized alloy, an enhanced version of Allegheny Ludlum’s AL-6XN(R) alloy, exhibits far greater resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress-corrosion cracking than exhibited by standard 300 series stainless steels. Less costly than traditional nickel-based corrosion resistant alloys, the AL-6XN alloy family has been successfully used in seawater handling systems used in power generation, desalination, shipping, and oil and gas applications. The typical iron-based composition of AL-6XN alloy includes 20% chromium, 24% nickel and 6% molybdenum.

"This project demonstrates our technical capability to work with a customer to provide the optimum material solution even in a difficult seawater environment," said Pat Hassey, Chairman, President and CEO of Allegheny Technologies. "The engineering company Stone and Webster wanted a material with superior stress corrosion cracking resistance. AL-6XN Optimized alloy is a special version of our proprietary AL-6XN alloy designed to meet these requirements. Our technical employees worked closely with Taipower's fabricator, Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction, Co., Ltd. of Korea, to help meet their needs."

Allegheny Ludlum expects sales of approximately $25 million from this project for plate products used to fabricate pipes, fittings and flanges. Shipments are scheduled during the fourth quarter 2004 and the first half of 2005.

ATI Allegheny Ludlum, an Allegheny Technologies company, is a world leader in the production and marketing of sheet, plate, and strip specialty materials including stainless steel, nickel-based alloys, titanium, and titanium-based alloys. The company also produces grain-oriented silicon electrical steel products, and tool steel plate.

Allegheny Technologies Inc. is one of the largest and most diversified specialty materials producers in the world, with revenues of approximately $2.4 billion during the 12-month period ending September 30, 2004. High-value products include nickel-based and cobalt-based alloys and superalloys, titanium and titanium alloys, specialty steels, super stainless steel, exotic alloys, which include zirconium, hafnium and niobium, tungsten materials, and highly engineered strip and Precision Rolled Strip(R) products.
