ArcelorMittal Wraps Up Overhaul of European Slab Caster
07/13/2020 - ArcelorMittal Asturias has commissioned a newly rebuilt slab caster at its Avilés plant in Spain, concluding a 14-week project that expanded its dimensional capabilities, according to the project contractor.
In a statement, SMS group said the 2-strand No. 2 caster is now able to produce slabs in thicknesses of 235 mm, 300 mm and 365 mm and in widths ranging from 800 mm to 2,200 mm. Prior to the project, it could produce slabs in thicknesses of 235 mm and 280 mm and in widths of up to 1,600 mm.
Utilizing existing foundations, SMS group said the caster was rebuilt from the curved mold down to the runout section in 96 days. Its metallurgical length was increased from 33.2 m to 36.7 m, and a number of SMS group technology packages were added to the machine.
“Just one month after the 14-week revamping period, the continuous caster had been ramped up to a daily production rate of over 100,000 tons of steel slabs,” SMS group said.
