ArcelorMittal to Spend EUR100 Million on Coke Oven Rebuild
09/28/2015 - ArcelorMittal will spend EUR100 million to rebuild two coke oven batteries at a Spanish steel works, ensuring compliance with environmental laws, the company has announced.
As part of the project, the company will reconstruct the 45-oven batteries at its Asturias works in Gijon; install an emissions collection and scrubbing system; and implement new byproduct management systems.
The project also includes a series of additional investments at other facilities. Those investments will allow for a new process to be implemented once the ovens are relit.
The refurbishment is to begin in mid-2016 and is expected to take two years to complete. The batteries are to reach full capacity in 2019, the company said.
Once in operation, the batteries should be able to meet the coke requirements of the steel works’ two blast furnaces, the company said.
“The investment will ensure coke production in ArcelorMittal Asturias for the next 40 years, and will contribute to securing the future of the steel industry in our region,” said José Manuel Arias, CEO of ArcelorMittal’s Asturias cluster.
