ArcelorMittal Supplying Steel for the Euro 2016 Football Stadium in Bordeaux
11/12/2014 - ArcelorMittal’s sites in France, Luxembourg, and Spain are supplying steel for the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux in the southwest of France, a new stadium which is to be home to the town’s Girondins de Bordeaux football club.
Construction of the 42,000-seat stadium is expected to complete in April 2015.
ArcelorMittal is supplying 4,200 metric tons of steel beams in S275 and S355J0 grades manufactured in the mills in Luxembourg and Spain and 500 metric tons of tubes produced in Spain. The company is also supplying 70,000 m² of steel for the interior trim, including the giant perforated canopy in ArcelorMittal’s Frequence® roofing profile produced in the Haironville plant in France. The canopy will protect the crowd against the elements as well as serving as a sound insulator. In addition to this, 20,000 m² of Cofraplus® open-rib composite floor decks produced in Strasbourg, France will be used in the flooring.
Unique design for a ‘green’ environment
The frame of the new stadium will be made of 12,000 metric tons of steel – twice the amount used for the Eiffel Tower. Steel will be used for the structure of the north and south stands, the framework of the upper tier, the roof structure, and the majority of the cladding – including the underside of the upper terraces and all of the roof supports and roof covers. The use of steel in the structure substitutes the more conventional use of concrete, resulting in significant weight reductions. Built with a rectangular roof sloping inward, the new multifunctional venue includes 644 round steel columns (up to 37 meters tall) that mimic trees in a forest. The stadium was designed by the Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron.

The stadium is one of ten venues hosting the UEFA EURO 2016 football championship in France. Located between a man-made lake and the Garonne river in north Bordeaux, it will replace Stade Chaban-Delmas — venue for games at the 1938 and 1998 FIFA World Cups — as home for the Girondins. Four group stage games and one quarter-final are planned to be played at this stadium at EURO 2016.
