ArcelorMittal Still is the World's Biggest Steelmaker. For Now.

According to the association’s 2020 World Steel in Figures, its annual tally of world steel production and trade, ArcelorMittal produced 97.31 metric tons of crude steel last year, followed by Baowu Group, which made 95.47 million metric tons.

ArcelorMittal saw its crude steel production grow slightly less than 1% from 2018. Meanwhile,  China Baowu Group added approximately 28 million metric tons of production, largely due to its acquisition of majority stakes in Maanshan Steel and Chongqing Steel.

The company’s goal is to produce 100 million metric tons by 2021.

As for U.S. companies, Nucor Corp. remained the world’s 12th-largest producer, reporting 23.09 million metric tons of crude steel production.  United States Steel Corporation and Steel Dynamics Inc. also remained on the list. However, each slipped one spot, with U. S. Steel falling to 27th largest and Steel Dynamics falling to 47th largest.

In terms of country rankings, China widened its lead all the more, producing 996.4 million metric tons in 2019, up 7.7%. India, meanwhile, further cemented its No. 2 position as production rose 1.7% while No. 3 Japan saw its output decline 4.8%.

The U.S. remained the world’s fourth-largest producer at 87.8 million metric tons.

Globally, steel demand rose in 2019, increasing 3.5% to nearly 1.77 billion metric tons of finished goods. Of that, Chinese consumption accounted for more than half, 51.3%.
