ArcelorMittal Starts Coke Oven Gas Injections in Spanish Blast Furnace
02/18/2021 - ArcelorMittal Asturias has modified a blast furnace the B blast furnace at its Gijón, Spain, plant, equipping it to consume hydrogen-rich coke oven gas.
In an announcement Thursday, ArcelorMittal said the modification is expected to lower carbon dioxide emissions by 125,000 metric tons annually. The company said the injection project is its most advanced to date, allowing it to utilize grey hydrogen in waste gasses and inject it into the furnace.
“The injection of coke oven gas into Blast Furnace B is an important milestone in the transformation of our processes to progress towards a more sustainable, low-carbon production model,” said ArcelorMittal Asturias chief executive Oswaldo Suárez.
In addition to the blast furnace project, ArcelorMittal said the plant also is wrapping up a project that will divert coke oven gas into the reheating furnaces in its heavy plate and rail mills, reducing the consumption of natural gas and CO2 emissions.
