ArcelorMittal Shelby to Invest US$30 Million in Tube Mill Expansion

A US$30 million investment will be made to increase cold drawing and finishing capacities to meet the market demand for increased production of drawn over mandrel (DOM) tube, a product supplied to the fluid power market.

ArcelorMittal Shelby has been operating at near to full capacity for years and numerous customers have petitioned Shelby to increase its volume offering to the market. Increased volumes from this expansion will allow the facility to de-bottleneck operations and more fully utilize existing up-stream tube making capacities.

“This investment will allow us to return to our historic DOM market share and continue to grow in a profitable market niche,” says Edward Vore, CEO, North American Tubular Products, ArcelorMittal. “It will allow us to maintain our service performance and give us additional operational flexibility.

“Our dedicated workforce, coupled with the support we received from many important stakeholders - the City of Shelby, Richland County, state and federal governments, JobsOhio and Team NEO, played a critical role in positioning Shelby as an attractive and sustainable place to invest,” added Vore.

The expansion is expected to begin in Q3 2014 and will last approximately 18 months. The facility currently has more than 630 employees, and this new investment is expected to create another 45 jobs once fully operational.

“The Shelby community has a rich history in manufacturing, and this investment solidifies our city’s role in manufacturing in the future,” said Shelby mayor Marilyn S. John. “To receive such a commitment of dollars shows the faith that ArcelorMittal has in our business friendly policies and tremendous workforce of Richland County and surrounding area.”

John Minor, president and chief investment officer, JobsOhio, said: “We are delighted that ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel company, chose Shelby for this expansion and the 45 high-paying jobs it will bring to the region. Ohio competed against sites across the globe. The company's decision to grow in Richland County is a testament to the skilled workforce and positive business climate here and throughout Ohio.”

ArcelorMittal Shelby has been in operations since 1890. Formerly Dofasco Copperweld, the tubular products facility manufactures welded and seamless precision tubes in a variety of steel grades for the fluid power, automotive, construction equipment, farm machinery, oil and gas tooling and service center market.

The facility is recognized as the market share leader of tubular product in the United States, which means it serves as the number one supplier, in volume and sales, in the market. With a current annual capacity of 250,000 tons, the facility is a major employer in Ohio’s Richland county area.
