ArcelorMittal Scoops Two Top Industry Awards for Innovation and Best Website

The company won ‘Steel industry website of the year’, for its corporate website, and the ‘Innovation of the year’ award for the automated “spreader beam” in the electric arc furnace in Dofasco, Canada.

ArcelorMittal’s corporate website came out on top, being strong competition including the corporate websites of China Steel, Essar Steel, Severstal and Voestalpine.

One-of-a-kind automated “spreader beam” brings Dofasco back-to-back ‘Steelies’
After winning the innovation of the year award in recognition of its KOBM Steelmaking Innovation through Automation project in 2013, ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Canada, proved its excellence once again by taking first place in the same category with the “spreader beam” in the electric arc furnace.

This year’s award is in recognition of the world’s only automated variable-width spreader beam which adjusts to accommodate both scrap bucket and hot metal ladle widths in the electric arc furnace. The solution means that the beam can be remote controlled to accommodate either size, which provides speed and efficiency in switching between scrap and hot metal charging in the furnace. The automation took a seven minute changeover down to 50 seconds, adding the potential for an extra heat of steel per day at the facility.

In total, ArcelorMittal was nominated in four categories, while Lakshmi Mittal, ArcelorMittal chairman and CEO, was nominated for the ‘Industry communicator of the year’ award.

ArcelorMittal’s nominations:
  • Steel industry website of the year
  • Innovation of the year - ArcelorMittal Dofasco for spreader beam use
  • Excellence in sustainability - ArcelorMittal Sonasid for responsible ship dismantling in Morocco for steel recycling
  • Excellence in Life Cycle Assessment - ArcelorMittal for their contribution to Life Cycle Assessment development through the organization of the annual Society and Materials conference
In addition to these, awards were also handed in ‘Excellence in education and training’ and ‘Journalist of the year’ categories.

The Steelie awards recognize member companies or individuals for their contribution to the steel industry over a one-year period in a series of categories impacting the steel industry. The Steelies are awarded at worldsteel’s annual conference in October. The first Steelie awards ceremony took place in 2010 at worldsteel-44 in Tokyo. Last year’s event took place in São Paulo in 2013.
