ArcelorMittal's Relationship With Shipbuilder Steams Onward
10/25/2016 - ArcelorMittal Asturias has reached a milestone in its relationship with shipbuilder STX France, which is about to take delivery of its 100,000th metric ton of steel plate from the steelmaker.
The most recent batch of steel, a shipment of 2,400 metric tons, left the Spanish port of El Musel last week, ArcelorMittal said in a statement.
ArcelorMittal is STX France’s preferred flat-steel supplier and is providing steel for new ships that are to be built by 2018. Of the four ships, one is currently in the outfitting phase, meaning that its hull has been finished. The hull of the second ship is close to completion.
The third ship is under construction, and the cutting of plates recently began for the fourth.
The close relationship between the two manufacturers arose from ArcelorMittal’s work on supplying steel for Harmony of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, which was built at STX France. Heavy plate from ArcelorMittal’s Gijon plant in Spain and coil from its Fos-sur-Mer plant in France were used in the ship.
“The project posed an exciting challenge for ArcelorMittal due to the stringent requirements involved, in terms of punctuality, regularity, reliability and quality -- a challenge that the teams at ArcelorMittal Asturias, ArcelorMittal Fos-sur-Mer and ArcelorMittal Distribution Solutions Saint-Nazaire were more than prepared to meet,” the company said.
“Their close cooperation with the customer enabled STX France to complete the construction of the ship’s steel shell on schedule in June 2015.”
