ArcelorMittal's Brazil Operations Supply 5,000 Tonnes of Steel for South America's Largest Building

ArcelorMittal steel is being used to build South America’s tallest skyscraper, the 237m Infinity Coast Tower. The tower is under construction in Balneário Camboriú, a beach resort in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.
The 5,000 tonnes of products being delivered include rebar (CA50 and CA60), as well as annealed wires and nails. The completion of the delivery is predicted for 2016. ArcelorMittal’s steel, supplied from Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, and Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, sites to cut and bend company Dobracor, will be used in construction throughout the building.
Infinity Coast Tower
The architecture is inspired by the modern skyline of Dubai and the building follows the latest sustainability standards. Plans include the reuse of rainwater for carwash services as well as soundproofing of the apartments that will be made possible by using ‘sound blankets’ made of recycled tires. High-durability ecological tiles that act as thermal and acoustic insulation will be laid throughout the building. The height of the building will be used as to generate energy from the downward movement of the elevators, which will be used to light the tower’s communal areas.
Key facts:
  • Height – 237m
  • Area occupied – 50,616m²
  • 66 floors
  • 18 ground floor shops
  • Construction began – 2013
  • Expected date of completion – 2016
First company with eco-labeled steel
Our steel used in this record-breaking project has been certified with the Brazilian Technical Standards Association (ABNT) ecolabel. The ABNT ecolabel was granted after audits and technical analyses in five ArcelorMittal units in Brazil - Juiz de Fora, Piracicaba, Cariacica, Itaúna and São Paulo. The certification refers to rebar, welded mesh, truss, nails, tie wire, light shapes and rods and rolled bars to be used in civil construction.  ABNT Ecolabel is a life cycle based ecolabel that is a voluntary method of environmental performance certification and labeling for products and services in Brazil. ArcelorMittal Long Carbon was the first steel producer to be granted with this certification in 2011.
