ArcelorMittal Produces First AHSS at Vega do Sul Plant in Brazil
06/26/2015 - As reported by Automotive Business, ArcelorMittal has produced its first coil of advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) at its Vega do Sul flat steel rolling mill in Southern Brazil.
ArcelorMittal invested $15 million dollars into the plant upgrade in order to produce Usibor®, a press-hardened boron steel with an aluminum-silicon (AlSi) coating for use in the automotive industry.
According to the company, it is estimated that by 2016 the production volume will be around 100 thousand tons per year. ArcelorMittal’s decision to locally produce AHSS steel stemmed from the needs of the Brazilian market to follow global trends in the production of lighter vehicles to achieve the new efficiency index.
The company hopes to increase utilization of high-strength steels in Brazilian vehicles from the current 6% to 25% by 2025.
