ArcelorMittal Poland Receives Environmental Awards

ArcelorMittal Poland recently received two awards in the Eco-laurels competition organized by the Polish Chamber of Ecology with honorary patronage from the minister of the environment, Andrzej Kraszewski.

The company received the main award in the category of protection from noise for the project “Reducing noise levels at ArcelorMittal Poland Kraków Unit,” for which the 14 loudest noise sources were determined and equipped with specially designed silencers and sound-absorbing systems. Cost of the investment amounted to 7.85 million PLN and included project development, acquiring subassemblies, their transport, and installation.

The jury also highly commended ArcelorMittal’s project “Granulated blast-furnace slag as eco-product used in industry.” In 2010, ArcelorMittal Poland produced and sold over 1.2 million tonnes of granulated slag, which can be used in production of blast-furnace cement, bricks, masonry mortar, and in coal mines as excavation filling. Using slag in the construction industry reduces the consumption of natural aggregates.

“The protection of the natural environment is not only required by law, but it is our social responsibility towards future generations,” said Stefan Dzienniak, BOD member of ArcelorMittal Poland responsible for external affairs, environment, and social projects.
