ArcelorMittal Plans Upgrades to Canadian Bar Mill

Design engineering is under way, and work is to begin in the second quarter of 2016. The new line should be operational by the end of the second quarter of 2017, the company said.

The Longueuil bar mill annually rolls about 400,000 metric tons of billet into special- and merchant-quality bars, rebar and other semi-finished products for North American customers. It is the world’s biggest supplier of light and heavy truck leaf springs for the major automakers.

The improvements will lift its annual capacity to about 500,000 metric tons, the company said. It intends to source additional billets from the two ArcelorMittal Montreal steel works in Contrecoeur.
