ArcelorMittal Ostrava’s Hot Strip Mill Installs New X-Ray Gauge from Thermo Scientific

The new facility will help improve the quality of manufactured strips.

"The new device sends information to the control system of the rolling mill more quickly and accurately. It also has a greater capacity of the database of measured values. By using all of its features we will significantly improve the quality of the supplied strips, thereby increasing customer satisfaction," said Martin Dryják, head of the Steckel mill.

Installation of the device in the Steckel mill took two weeks followed by a trial operation. The new X-ray equipment SIPRO by Thermo Scientific operates on the basis of stereoscopic scanning of steel strip using two X-ray tubes. This permits a 3D computer image of the steel strip along its entire length. In addition to measuring the thickness, width and cross section of the strip, the device is capable of measuring the speed of a corrugation of the strip, the temperature, the shape of the edges as well as detecting surface defects.
