ArcelorMittal Ostrava Tube Mill Celebrates 65 Years of Producing Pipe

During its existence the tube mill has provided jobs for 5,417 employees. Over the years the plant has been operated by 3 generations of employees while names such as Zemek, Pařík, Sehnal or Zegzulka have been on the payroll since the beginning of the mill to this day. Since 1949, the subsidiary of ArcelorMittal Ostrava has produced more than 15 million metric tons of tubes and pipes.

“If we placed all the products in a line one after another we would create a line in the length of 1,144,000 kilometers, which is almost three times the distance from the Earth to the Moon,” said Libor Černý, CEO of AMTPO.

AMTPO is the largest producer of tubes and pipes in the Czech Republic as well as in the European part of the ArcelorMittal Group. The history of AMTPO dates back to the middle of 1930s when the Vítkovice Iron Works started thinking about expanding the company and also about building a new tube mill that was later used as the basis for the future tube mill in Nová huť. The halls for the tube mill were built in 1947 but it was not until 21 November 1949 when the first pipe was produced during trial operation. At that time the tube rolling mill had 86 employees mainly from the Vítkovice tube rolling mill. Regular production started in April 1950 and the production volumes have gradually increased from several thousand metric tons to the current 320,000 metric tons.

In 2003, after the privatization and acquisition by a foreign owner, Nová huť became part of ArcelorMittal. In 2007, the tube rolling mill was carved out into an independent company and it became a subsidiary of ArcelorMittal Ostrava.
