ArcelorMittal Ostrava Selects Contractor for New Environmental Projects
03/20/2015 - ArcelorMittal Ostrava has obtained up to 90% subsidy from the EU for another six environmental projects within the 48th call.
In the second week of February 2015, the company completed selection of the contractors for these projects by concluding a contract with a Czech company AC Technologies Ltd. for the implementation of three out of the six capex projects. The total amount of these environmental projects exceeds 530 million crowns (~US$21 million), and thanks to them the mill will reduce fugitive emissions by another 137 tons of dust per year. With these projects ArcelorMittal Ostrava builds on the projects from the 36th call that will also reduce emissions under the limits required by the EU. In total, this year the mill builds 13 above-standard capex projects for de-dusting with a total value of 3.1 billion crowns and all of them have the completion date this year.
“After signing the agreements with all the contractors we just need to complete the necessary documentation and the construction can start as soon as possible. The condition for obtaining the subsidies is that all projects have to be completed by the end of 2015, so the construction work will continue without any breaks, including weekends and night shifts,” said Petr Baranek, the CGO of ArcelorMittal Ostrava, when commenting on the expected course of implementation of the de-dusting projects.
The environmental projects within the 48th call are focusing on capturing of fugitive emissions that are generated when handling dusty materials, such as ore fines, limestone, etc. Modernization projects and bag houses will be implemented at the sinter plant and also at the blast furnace plant generating the highest volume of dust emissions. The projects implemented at the sinter plant will include de-dusting of the iron ore bridge bins charging system, improving the quality of sintering in the northern part of the sinter plant which will reduce the volume of emissions at the sintering house and transport routes and they will also increase the efficiency of de-dusting of the discharging routes in the northern part of the sinter plant. The blast furnace plant project will include de-dusting of the torpedo ladles cleaning station and also de-dusting of the blast furnace charging system.
Besides the 48th call, the Ostrava based mill is also implementing other capex projects focusing on de-dusting within the 36th call. Currently, the company is implementing 13 above-standard capex projects with a total value of 3.1 billion crowns. The basis of these environmental capex projects is installation of bag houses, which currently represent the most modern de-dusting technology for steelmaking operations in the world that reliably captures 99 % of dust particles, including particles bellow 2.5 micrometers. Their application is also recommended as the best available technique by the EU.
“Since 2003 we have invested more than 4 billion crowns from our own resources into environmental projects, thus reducing the volume of emissions by two thirds. Since 2012, we have been meeting the most stringent limits set by the EU that will come to force only in 2016. And thanks to the fact that we will be achieving lower emission values than prescribed, we have obtained the subsidies from the EU for these new above-standard environmental projects,” said Tapas Rajderkar, the CEO of ArcelorMittal Ostrava.
ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. is part of the world’s largest steel and mining group ArcelorMittal. Annually it produces 2 million tonnes of steel which is mainly used in construction and machinery. It is the only manufacturer of safety barriers and grain-oriented electrical steels in the Czech Republic. Besides the Czech market the company sells its products to more than 40 countries around the world. ArcelorMittal Ostrava and its subsidiaries employ 7500 people. Average income was CZK 35.124 in 2014. The company produces iron and steel in compliance with all environmental legislation. Years ahead it has reduced its environmental footprint beyond the requirements of the EU legislation and this year it will complete 13 subsidized above-standard environmental projects worth CZK 3.1 billion. The sole shareholder is ArcelorMittal Holdings A.G.
