ArcelorMittal Ostrava Launches Power Plant Denitrification Project
09/18/2013 - ArcelorMittal Ostrava has launched an investment project to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions at its power plant in the Czech Republic.
The main supplier of the environmental project worth a billion crowns (US$51.7 million), ČKD Praha DIZ, will cooperate with a number of local companies. During the first stage of construction ArcelorMittal Ostrava will conduct safety trainings for all suppliers, prepare project documentation and site handover. The denitrification is part of the overall power plant greening project, which also includes the desulfurization launched last year, and will bring about a significant reduction of gaseous emissions from ArcelorMittal Energy Ostrava.
The investment of the steelmaker in Ostrava has been granted a subsidy of 40% from the State Environmental Fund. The Fund approved the subsidy at the end of August, by which the supply contract came into force and the first preparatory phase of the project could begin. Project documentation, schedule and site handover are organized along with the mandatory safety training.
"According to the original plan, the contract was supposed to begin in July. However, we had to wait until the contract with the general contractor entered into force, which was dependent on the approval of public subsidies by the State Environmental Fund," said director of ArcelorMittal Energy Ostrava, Petr Baranek, explaining the complications with the commencement of construction. "I am pleased that today everything is running in line with the schedule, and that local companies will also be involved in the construction," he added.
The general contractor of the environmental investment project is ČKD Praha DIZ. Among the subcontracts are a number of companies from the Moravian-Silesian region such as VAMOZ Servis in assembly and construction works, Ostrava branch of Siemens, which will deliver new control systems and systems for measurement and control, and Orgrez, which will participate in the design and implementation of the storage and distribution of reagent. Small-size local companies as Protis Plus or Investing Servis and others will also participate in the project.
After the completion of the project, emissions of nitrogen oxides from three boilers (boiler 8, 9 and 10) will have been reduced by more than half. The ongoing desulfurization in the amount of half a billion Czech Crowns will bring about more than four-fold reduction in sulfur dioxide emissions from the same boilers. The greening project at the power plant will at the same time reduce the emissions of dust particles and all three boilers will meet the stringent emission limits which will come into force in 2016. "The greening of the power plant is in line with our long-term efforts to contribute as much as possible to improving the environment in Ostrava," said Baranek.
ArcelorMittal Energy Ostrava is a subsidiary of ArcelorMittal Ostrava. It is a large industrial power plant complex with a special focus on the needs of the metallurgical industry. It has a total designed capacity of the boiler house of 1,435 tonnes boiler/h, the designed capacity of the power plant is 254 MW. All the generated energy together with compressed and blown air or steam which are also produced by the power plant, is used directly by the steelmaker. During the heating season, the power plant also supplies heat to 25,000 inhabitants of Ostrava-Jih district. ArcelorMittal Energy Ostrava employs more than 300 people.
ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. is the biggest steel-making complex in the Czech Republic and belongs to the world's largest steel and mining group ArcelorMittal. The annual production capacity of the company is 3 million tons of steel; about 50% of production is exported to more than 40 countries worldwide. ArcelorMittal Ostrava and its subsidiaries employ more than 7500 people. Average income of its employees amounted to 34,213 CZK in 2012. ArcelorMittal Ostrava produces iron and steel in compliance with all environmental legislation. It already conforms to the EU best available techniques (BAT) emission limits that are to be binding only from 2016 onwards. The sole shareholder is ArcelorMittal Holdings A.G.
