ArcelorMittal Ostrava Helping Philosophy Students Transition into Practice

Thirty students are in ArcelorMittal Ostrava for their internships during which they will learn specialized terminology from the area of steelmaking, commerce, economy, and law ,and they are testing their translating skills on authentic texts.
“We are helping the students to test and improve their language skills in an environment that they did not know before. This way they will acquire valuable practical experience and we will help them with a smooth transition from their studies to practice without the need for a lengthy initial training,” said Barbora Černá Dvořáková, the spokesperson and mentor of students’ internship in ArcelorMittal Ostrava.
ArcelorMittal Ostrava is a partner of a project called Innovation of the English and German Study Program (ISPAN) prepared by the Institute of Foreign Languages at the Faculty of Philosophy and Science at the Silesian University in Opava. “Thanks to the ISPAN project and partners like ArcelorMittal Ostrava, students studying English and German philology can acquire translating practice already during their study period which is an opportunity which they did not have in the past,” explains Marie Crhová, coordinator of the ISPAN project and an assistant professor at the Institute of Foreign Languages at the Silesian University in Opava.
Within the framework of this program, the company has helped with the development of the education study modules which the students underwent before the internship. Currently the internship takes place directly on the company premises where the students had the opportunity to get acquainted with the company and the work of the company translators. Right now they are working on translations of authentic specialized tests and they consult the completed translations with professional translators.
