ArcelorMittal Ostrava concluded a cooperation agreement with VSB - Technical University of Ostrava for the areas of science and research, conferences, and publishing activities, and to support the best students’ works. The university will receive funding on the basis of cooperation for this year, following up on many years of previous successful cooperation.
“VSB is a reliable and long-term technological partner for our steelworks. We appreciate the innovation of local experts, including students, and we are pleased that we have such a strong partner in the region,” said Tapas Rajderkar, CEO of ArcelorMittal Ostrava.
Cooperation in the science and research area will involve six projects. The VSB - Technical University of Ostrava will design a study for use of the waste heat from the heat plant of ArcelorMittal Energy Ostrava for environmental heating, cooling, and for local electricity production in the surrounding social and industrial buildings. Another research project will address the issue of lining of casting ladles.
The second area of support relates to the conference and publication activities in which ArcelorMittal Ostrava will contribute a series of scientific conferences and seminars. The third area focuses on the direct collaboration with university students. ArcelorMittal Ostrava will financially support extraordinary theses.
Based on long-term cooperation between ArcelorMittal and VSB, a series of research projects originated in recent years helped the metallurgical plant directly. One of them was the simulation of cooling of steel strap coils, which are produced at ArcelorMittal Ostrava steel mills. ArcelorMittal bought a 50113LS annealing furnace for the purpose of research, built to order by CLASIC Řevnice. The furnace can provide for fast temperature changes between 400 to 1200°C.
