ArcelorMittal Ostrava Completes Installation of Deduster System

ArcelorMittal Ostrava has completed the installation of a new deduster system at its sinter plant three months before the scheduled date. The investment of one billion Czech crowns is anticipated to cut dust emissions from the Sinter Plant North to less than 20 mg/m3 (from the present 50 mg/m3, which is the current legal limit). The total dust emissions from sintering will drop by 270 tonnes per year, the company claims.

The performance textile filters will catch 70% more dust particles than the current electrostatic filters. Mufflers installed in the huge pipes will help to reduce the noise generated by the filter operation by 15%.

Only six similar dedusters are in operation in European sinter plants, according to ArcelorMittal Ostrava. The system used at ArcelorMittal Ostrava has an added reactor, which makes it possible to capture not only dust particles, but also up to 60% of all sulfur dioxide and dioxins.

The contract with the project contractor Lühr Filter of Germany, which was worth one billion Czech crowns, was signed in 2008. In 2009, the project was in preparation and the construction of the deduster in the sinter plant commenced in February 2010. Building and assembly was also subcontracted to local companies including, VS-Invest, Elektromont Brno, Hutní projekt Ostrava, and ST2 LLC D/B/A Sound Technologies.

In early October, the project for the dedusting of Sinter Plant North won Český PATRON, a prize awarded by the Chamber of Commerce under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment to projects that benefit the environment.
