ArcelorMittal Ostrava Announces New Director General

ArcelorMittal Ostrava announced the nomination of Augustine Kochuparampil as the company’s new Director General, effective June 1. Kochuparampil fills the position of Sanjay Samaddar, who has been nominated to the position of CEO–Flat Carbon Europe Business Division East and CEO–ArcelorMittal Poland; he will also remain on the company’s Board of Directors.

“It is not easy for me to leave at this moment having worked in Ostrava with a team of extremely dedicated and high-performing managers, who are totally committed to production efficiencies whilst also focusing on our corporate responsibility programs,” said Samaddar. “I deeply respect the partnership approach of our Trade Union Leaders, without whose cooperation, we would not be able to face the new challenges of the economic crisis, and I admire the passion of our 6,500 colleagues, and the pride with which they work for this great company. “On the other hand, I consider the Polish assignment a new challenge and appreciate the opportunity to work in the place where my family lives,” he added.

Kochuparampil, who currently holds the position of Director General of ArcelorMittal Galati in Romania, is known as one of the most experienced top managers in the steel giant. He served on ArcelorMittal Ostrava’s Board of Directors from 2004 to 2008 and guided the company in the initial stages after privatization.

“I am delighted to know that my current position will be filled without a gap and by such an experienced manager as Augustine Kochuparampil,” continued Samaddar. “With him, I am sure ArcelorMittal Ostrava will successfully continue in all the positive trends that have already been established.”

Kochuparampil joined ArcelorMittal in 1995 as a Controller at Mittal Steel Hamburg. Two years later he was promoted Chief Financial Officer, and later oversaw the restructuring and consolidation of the European units in his capacity as CFO of Ispat Europe (2001 to 2003). In 2003 he was named CFO of Mittal Steel Poland, serving as a key member of the management team that managed the restructuring of the Polish units.

In January 2007, Kochuparampil was appointed as CEO of ArcelorMittal Galati (Romania), where he focused on improving operational efficiencies and corporate responsibility programs. Kochuparampil holds a Master’s degree in Accounting from the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of India and a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Ravishankar University, Raipur (India).
