ArcelorMittal Moves Forward on EAF Installation in Luxembourg

According to ArcelorMittal, the new furnace is among the projects under a memorandum of understanding between the steelmaker and the country’s Economy Ministry, which is allocating EUR15 million to the effort.

"The realization of this project is tangible proof that we are capable, in Luxembourg, of sustaining and developing our industry, through a project that fits perfectly into the road map set by Europe to combat climate change, and is also in line with the work begun by the High Committee for Industry,” said Economy Minister Franz Fayot.

ArcelorMittal said the new furnace will improve energy efficiency and increase the plant’s production capacity to 2.5 million metric tons annually, an increase of nearly 15%.

“With this new facility replacing the current EAF operated since 1997, and with additional investments to be made in other areas of the Belval steel plant, ArcelorMittal Luxembourg plants will be self-sufficient in crude steel production capacity to cover the needs of finished rolled products in the Grand Duchy,” the company said.

As a result, Mill A at ArcelorMittal’s Rodange plant will be supplied exclusively by Belval. The Rodange mill is a long products facility that makes rails and niche products.

The furnace is to be commissioned in 2025.
