ArcelorMittal Modernizes Seamless Pipe Mill in Czech Republic
02/06/2014 - ArcelorMittal Tubular Products Ostrava (AMTPO) has completed a major investment project to modernize the manufacture of seamless small diameter pipes and increase its production capacity in the Czech Republic.
The investment worth US$ 7.6 million will result in higher quality products and increased production capacity as well as cost savings and a greater occupational safety. The line was officially put into operation on 3 February 2014 in the presence of senior management of ArcelorMittal Tubular Energy division.
"With the modernization we are responding to demanding customers’ requirements and increasing demand for our products, especially in the North American market. We are constantly working to improve our competitiveness," says Libor Černý, CEO of AMTPO.
At the Stiefel 140-mm mill AMTPO produces seamless OCTG such as tubing, drill pipe and line pipe with diameter of 21.3 mm to 140 mm. As part of the investment project, which was completed in January 2014, AMTPO installed modern and efficient equipment for pipe processing and testing — bevelling machines, a press for pipe testing by internal water overpressure and equipment for storage and bundling of pipes. The aim of the project was also the optimization of material flow, which will increase the annual production capacity of the oil pipes from the current 24,000 tonnes by up to 18,000 tonnes. The added value of the new equipment is also in cost savings or reducing safety risks during material handling.
ArcelorMittal Tubular Products Ostrava a.s. is the biggest producer of tubes and pipes in the Czech Republic. The main product is smooth, threaded, flanged and OCTG seamless pipes. The company also manufactures spirally welded pipes for the gas industry. Its annual production capacity is 320,000 tonnes. ArcelorMittal Tubular Products Ostrava has 1025 employees and is a subsidiary of ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s.
ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. is the largest steelmaker in the Czech Republic and part of the world’s largest steel and mining group ArcelorMittal.
